"Industry Reactor-Perspective on Whey, Nutrition and Non-Communicable Diseases"

Jeff Zachwieja, Ph.D. is Sr. Director for Global Nutrition Sciences at PepsiCo.  Dr. Zachwieja has specific research expertise in the use of stable isotopes to study whole body protein turnover, as well as skeletal muscle protein synthesis. He has used nutrition, exercise, bed rest, and hormones as ways to understand the regulation of human skeletal muscle protein turnover. 

Dr. Zachwieja earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University, both in Physical Education. In 1991 he received a doctorate in human bioenergetics from Ball State University.  From 1991–1994 he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He then served as assistant professor and chief of the Exercise and Nutrition Program at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  From 2000 to 2011Dr. Zachwieja held various technical and leadership positions in PepsiCo working mostly in the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and the Global R&D organization.  He then held the role of Sr. Vice President for Nutrition Research, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs at the National Dairy Council until returning to PepsiCo in late 2016. 

Dr. Zachwieja has been awarded seven patents and is an author or co-author on more than 60 peer reviewed scientific publications and reviews.  He has given numerous invited presentations in the U.S. and abroad and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
